Escaping the winter

Chasing the summer in January

When your three most favorite things combine mean “Drawing naked men in the sun” – the long Berlin winter can be tough. So after this year’s extra calm Christmas and new year’s holidays it was time for an escape. Arriving in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria we found out we had perfect timing. Shortly after getting there, the winter hit not just Berlin but entire Europe extra hard in a late comeback. With snow piling up in cities that hardly ever see snow at all.

Where the gays gather during the winter

As some of you may know, the island of Gran Canaria, especially the south around Maspalomas is one of the most popular gay travel destinations in Europe. For decades already.

Maspalomas means: more doves.

Although it offers a whole bunch of nightlife options, especially around the Yumbo Center, i wouldn’t actually call it a party destination. The area breathes relaxation. I find it absolutely charming how the gay community here absolutely peacefully coexists beside the senior straight couples from Scandinavia, Germany and England. Most of them are regular guests, who run from the winter in Europe every year just like we did this time.

Open air nude drawing – without asking

The part I enjoy most is definitely the endless beach. Even though the water of the Atlantic isn’t actually warm this time of the year, it’s still possible to swim and to refresh yourself after soaking up the African sun for a while. My favorite spot by far is the section around Chringuito No. 7 – the gay nude beach. Normally this part of the beach – just like many others near the little beach kiosks – offers a lot of deck chairs for rent – due to the Corona restrictions there were non this year. So everyone tried to make hisself comfortable without.
