Berlins queer Christmas Market
The gay-lesbian-queer Christmas market, the “Christmas Avenue“, has been around for a few years now at Berlin’s Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg. Initially in the open air in front of the Metropol Theater, for the past two years it has been a little more sheltered and even more cosy under the U1-3 elevated railroad. And this Christmas market is one of the first to open in Berlin. Last season, it opened on November 10. Until Remembrance Day, after which the Christmas market season traditionally begins, it is cleverly called “LGBTQ Winterdays”.

And this time I also had my very own Paul Astor stand. A glittering little open-air, or rather fresh-air gallery. And it turned out that there was enough space to present almost the entire range of Paul Astor to my audience. I had decorated the walls of the booth with large charcoal nudes, my sketches from the nudist beach, my Men on the Index series and drawings and watercolors from my TikTok live sessions. The almost 6 meter long counter belonged to the SWEET MEMORIES memo game, the hand-signed postcards and the matching fridge magnets. I even found space for the limited edition penis prints on aluminum dibond! (I will put a few of them into my shop soon, stay tuned!)

And it was precisely these penis portraits on aluminum dibond (all motifs from my memory game) that caused quite a stir among some visitors. When I exhibited at Christmas Avenue in Cologne in 2016, the authorities were much quicker to act. I had barely opened my stand three hours before the Cologne public order office, followed by the public prosecutor’s office, appeared on the scene. Here in Berlin it took a little longer. But after 4 weeks I also received a visit from the public order office here. Fortunately, the representatives of the authorities here were much more willing to talk and agreed on a solution that was acceptable to everyone.

And so Christmas Avenue Berlin became the first Christmas market (at least in Berlin) with an age restriction. The entrance to the market is already secured by security, but now our security guards also checked the age of the visitors: admission from 16 years! Definitely a better solution for me than back in Cologne, when I had to tape up all my painted penises. Which of course didn’t leave much space left for my pictures.
Fortunately, this didn’t detract from the success of my stand. The story was gratefully received by the press and the articles on this topic attracted even more visitors to the market. I was even able to give a few camera interviews – e.g. for RBB (Berlin and Brandenburg Public TV) and AFP, the French press agency.

But just like in Cologne, most of the visitors to my stand in Berlin were completely dumbfounded that a few painted willies could still cause such a circus in 2023. I find it exciting. And above all, I found the conversations about it with my visitors and customers incredibly inspiring. That alone made the 6 weeks on Christmas Avenue totally worthwhile for me!
Berlins eigener queerer Weihnachtsmarkt
Wer hätte gedacht, dass meine gemalten Penisse in Berlin im Jahr 2023 dann doch noch einen Skandal verursachen? Also ich zumindest nicht! Doch beginnen wir von vorn:
Den schwul-lesbisch-queeren Weihnachtsmarkt, die „Christmas Avenue“ gibt es nun schon einige Jahre am Berliner Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg. Anfangs unter freiem Himmel vor dem Metropol-Theater, seit zwei Jahren etwas geschützter und noch viel gemütlicher unter der Hochbahn von U1-3. Und dieser Weihnachtsmarkt ist einer der ersten, der in Berlin eröffnet. In der gerade vergangenen Saison war die Eröffnung schon am 10. November. Bis zum Volkstrauertag, nach dem traditionell die Weihnachtsmarkt-Saison beginnt, heisst er geschickt: „LGBTQ Winterdays“.
Der frechste Stand am Platz
Und hier hatte ich dieses Mal auch einen ganz eigenen Paul Astor Stand. Eine glitzernde kleine Open-Air, oder eher Fresh-Air Galerie. Und es stellte sich heraus, dass der Platz ausreichte, meinem Publikum nahezu die ganze Bandbreite von Paul Astor zu präsentieren. Die Wände des Stands hatte ich mit großen Aktzeichnungen in Kohle, meinen Skizzen vom FKK-Strand, meiner Men on the Index – Serie und Zeichnungen und Aquarellen aus meinen TikTok Live-Sessions geschmückt. Der fast 6 Meter lange Tresen gehörte dem SWEET MEMORIES Memospiel, den handsignierten Postkarten und den passenden Kühlschrankmagneten. Selbst für die limitierten Penis-Drucke auf Alu-Dibond habe ich Platz gefunden!
Und so wurde die Christmas Avenue Berlin der erste Weihnachtsmarkt (zumindest in Berlin) mit einer Altersbeschränkung. Der Eingang zum Markt ist ohnehin durch Security gesichert, nun kontrollierten unsere Sicherheitsleute auch noch das Alter der Besucher: Zutritt ab 16 Jahren! Für mich definitiv eine bessere Lösung als damals in Köln, als ich sämtliche gemalten Penisse abkleben musste. Was natürlich bei meinen Bildern nicht mehr viel Fläche übrig ließ.
Ein gemalter Penis sagt mehr als tausend Worte
Meinem Erfolg mit dem Stand tat dies zum Glück keinen Abbruch. Denn die Story wurde von der Presse dankbar aufgenommen und die Artikel zu diesem Thema lockten gefühlt noch mehr Besucher auf den Markt. Sogar einige Kamera-Interviews konnte ich geben – z.B. für den RBB und den AFP, die Französische Presseagentur.
Aber genau wie in Köln waren auch die meisten Besucher an meinem Stand in Berlin vollkommen sprachlos, das ein paar gemalte Pimmel im Jahr 2023 noch einen solchen Zirkus verursachen. Ich finde es spannend. Und vor allem die Gespräche darüber mit meinen Besuchern und Kunden fand ich unglaublich inspirierend. Schon alleine deshalb haben sich für mich die 6 Wochen auf der Christmas Avenue voll gelohnt!
